POWER UPDATE FROM THE ANTIGONISH EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT TEAM
The Antigonish Town and County Emergency Management Team (EMT) have an update on the power situation in Antigonish Town and County.
The Town Electric Utility worked in lockstep with Nova Scotia Power last evening to bring power to areas throughout the Town and fringe. At 8 p.m. the Lochaber substation was powered up to serve areas of Highway #7, Post Road, James Street to ensure residents have access to food and fuel. Between 8:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. Braemore and Cloverville substations came online and provided power to the majority of town residents.
“Crews have been working tirelessly to get power back to customers of the Antigonish Electric Utility. Our priority was to get the grocery stores, gas stations, and restaurants restored, and of course the hospital and long-term care homes,” said Laurie Boucher, Mayor of the Town of Antigonish. “At this point in time, more residents have power than not, and they continue to work get everyone back online.” said Mayor Laurie Boucher.
There are several isolated areas throughout the Town of Antigonish that are still without power and crews will continue to address these issues. The following is a list of streets (or portions of streets) that are currently without power:
- Church Street Extension from old Co-op Building
- Garvie Roads (parts of)
- Greenhill Trailer Park (part of)
- Spruce Lane
- Chestnut Street
- Whidden Trailer Park
- Viewville Street
- Thompson Street
- Interval (MacLellan Street, Dolorosa Avenue, Scarboro Drive, Coady Avenue, Arbour Drive, Carter Cr)
- Highland Drive
- Hillcrest Street
- Governors Lane and Greenwold
- Fernwood Drive
- From Sullivans Auto to Sydney Street
- 15 to 40 individual customers with damaged service entrance that require an electrician to make repairs.
The priority area today will be the interval area and Hillcrest Street as they have a seniors care facility. Further restorations times are unknown at this time. Repairs are extensive. The EMT will continue to inform residents with updates as they are available.
“In the County we are still seeing widespread outages,” said Warden Owen McCarron. “There are over 5,000 customers in Antigonish County without power with varying estimated restorations over the coming days. We are continuing to work with Nova Scotia Power to identify those restoration times.”

Saturday, September 24, 2022 Update
RCMP and Antigonish Emergency Management Officials are advising residents that unless you absolutely must be on the roads, avoid all travel at this time. There are many trees, power lines and a lot of debris on the roads throughout the Town and County. Some roads are impassable. We are allowing time for the Nova Scotia Department of Public Works to assess road conditions. By staying off the roads, you are allowing crews to assess the damage and begin clean up efforts.
Friday, September 23, 2022 Update
There are a number of community based comfort centres that may open as a result of the storm. The following centres have back-up power sources and may open if conditions and volunteer capacity allow.

North Shore Volunteer Fire Department

St. Andrews District Community Centre
Tracadie District Fire Department
Havre Boucher Community Centre
The 4-Valleys Fire Department in Maryvale does not have back up power but is currently open as a warming centre and will remain open for the duration of the storm.

Wednesday, September 21, 2022 Update
The Municipality of the County of Antigonish urges residents to properly prepare for the severe storm that is predicted to bring hurricane force winds and heavy rain to our area late Friday, September 23 into Saturday, September 24.
Based on the forecast, loss of power is expected and residents should be prepared to cope on your own for at least the first 72 hours. This involves having proper supplies such as water, food, batteries, radio and flashlights.
To prepare, residents should secure or take in outdoor furniture, flower pots and garbage bins, as well as ensure windows are closed and basements and backdoors are properly secured.
The Municipality thanks residents in advance for their cooperation and reminds everyone to stay safe.
